The Alberni District Teachers’ Union (ADTU) recognizes professional learning as a cornerstone of teaching. We support members in accessing opportunities that reflect their professional interests and goals, whether they focus on individual practice, collaboration with colleagues, or approaches that enhance student learning. The District Professional Development Committee helps coordinate and support these activities in ways consistent with our collective agreement and our shared values.
In our district, professional development is guided by committees at both the school and district level, with funding set aside each year to make a wide range of learning opportunities possible.
Professional Development Opportunities
Members can engage in a wide variety of professional learning activities, including:
- Workshops and conferences
- School-based or district-wide sessions
- Local Specialist Association (LSA) events
- Provincial Specialist Association (PSA) conferences
- Self-directed study and inquiry
- Collaborative projects with colleagues
Professional development is flexible so members can pursue the opportunities that best align with their professional goals.
Funding and Support
The Professional Development Fund provides financial support for approved learning activities. Each school elects a Professional Development Representative who helps members navigate the funding process and maintain communication with the District Professional Development Committee.
Full guidelines on how Professional Development funds are allocated and reimbursed are available through the ADTU Professional Development Operational Procedures.
Forms & Applications
Members can access application forms and related resources through their school Professional Development Representative or the ADTU office.
